Appropriate footwear is key to cycling performance. Shoes are specific to your discipline, mountain bike shoes are very different to road. Shoes for MTB are designed around traction and again can very depending on your MTB discipline! Downhill/enduro shoes are close to what is generally referred to as a skate shoe in style. Heavier, bulkier and offer more protection, plus a bigger for foot print for more traction. An XC shoe are performance orientated, usually with a stiffer sole with less tread. These shoes can also be used for gravel riding. Road shoes, use a different cleat pattern (3 bolt, rather than 2 bolt). These are extremely stiff for maximum pedalling effiency, with next to no tread pattern. Road shoes are not meant for normal walking!
