There are still plenty of die hard flat pedal riders still out there. Even though clip-in pedals are becoming the normal in a lot of mountain bike disciplines. A lot of riders still enjoy the freedom and security of a flat pedal. There are many advantages to a flat pedal. The main not being locked into the bike, on steep/technical terrain this can improve a riders confidence massively and not worry about coming unstuck in a crash. But as much as flat pedals can increase confidence, they won’t work without a good set of flat shoes. Sticky sole rubber is used to increase the traction on the pedal.
