Brake mounts are required for certain frame and fork combos. Generally used for going up a size on the disc rotor. There are two types of brake mount. One called post, the other IS. IS mounts bolt in from the side, these are typically common on earlier disc bikes. On forks particularly these are almost entirely phased out, in favour of the post mount. There are a few frames still using IS mounts but majority have changed over to post. The IS mount bolts are mounted side in, whereas the post mount are straight. Depending on the frame/fork there is always a set rotor height, this is where mounts come in. For example if your fork is a 160mm post mount, in order to use a 180mm disc rotor you will require a +20mm post mount to achieve the correct position.
