Chain guides are a key components to most aggressive mountain bikes. It simply acts as a guide about the chainring in order to keep the chain on. Usually made of plastic, it incases the chain and hinders it’s ability to fall off the side of the ring. With modern narrow wide chainrings providing better retention, they are not for everyone. But it does serve as a bit off added protection when the going gets rough. Some options also integrate bash guard systems too. This protects the chainring from any impacts from below… rocks, roots etc… They are typically mounted via ISCG 05 tabs on the frame but there can be other seat post or BB variations.
