Pedals are very specific to the nature of the ride and rider. Generally speaking there are two types of pedal, flats and clipless. From there, two different styles either MTB or road. Requirements are very different for both disciplines. Road cyclists generally look for stiffness, pure power out put to make sure their maximum effort is going straight to the ground. Mountain bike riders are looking for traction and control. When riding technical terrain, those feet need to stay in place. Then comes the choice of riding flats or clipless. XC riders go clipless all day, being locked into the pedal provides the stability and control to unleash the watts. In more gravity fed disciplines, downhill and enduro. The clipless option is mostly favoured but there are still a few die hards that stick to the flats.
