Clipless pedals essentially lock you to your bike. Generally using a spring/release mechanism, a cleat attached the bottom of a cycling specific shoe snaps into the pedal. Then a twist of the heel and out the cleat pops. It is the preferred method for advanced cyclists that having performance on their mind. Being locked into the pedal allows for better pedalling efficiency and power transfer to the wheels. It also allows a user to dial in their perfect foot position. Meaning every time you clip in, you are in the same position. Clipless pedals are available in either road or MTB stylings. Road typically are single sided with only power transfer and weight in mind. Whereas MTB options tend to offer double sided entry and a cage for extra support/traction under foot.
